Is New Zealand Really “As Racist As F***”?
20 Jun @ 9:30am – 4:30pm
Ponsonby Community Centre
Rebels need to understand the links between the climate and Ecological Crisis and other oppressions, that the ruling elite concentrate wealth with little or no regard for others nor the environment on which we all are dependent. The workshop aims at providing knowledge, understanding and resources. We will cover as many of these questions as we can in the time we have available: • What led to the Treaty/Te Tiriti? • What are the similarities and differences between Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Crown’s English-language version? • How has the Treaty/Te Tiriti been breached? • What are the implications and consequences of these breaches? • What is institutional racism? Systemic racism? Casual racism? Everyday racism? • What are some examples of these in New Zealand? • What is the difference between equality and equity, and does this matter? • What is meant by “white privilege” and does it exist in New Zealand? • What are some productive ways to respond to racist language or behaviour? • What else can I do? Sue has been facilitating Treaty and with an academic background with a special focus on racism and white privilege. She has been running workshops for the Treaty Educators Resource Centre, and is part of Tangata Te Tiriti, A koha to contribute to costs. Plus a short break for a bring and share lunch.
